Over the past few years, I’ve become a convert to soap – the solid bars, not the liquid. Using it can help significantly cut down on our use of plastic (soap is often sold wrapped in paper, in cardboard boxes, or even completely unpackaged), plus it cuts down the unnecessary transportation of water (a large proportion of what’s in all those bottles of shampoo and liquid soap).
In addition, it’s easy to find small soap producers who source their ingredients ethically and do not use palm oil in any of its many forms. A number of people have told me that they cannot use soap at all, but I encourage you to give it a go.
I used to find soaps very harsh on my sensitive skin, but these days there are so many options and so many good soap-makers who select their ingredients very carefully that you might be surprised. This set seems to have a more solid finish than the other wooden soap dishes we tested, and the design keeps soap dry and allows for ample drainage.
Bamboo 2-Pack
This set is a simple bamboo design made from a single piece of wood. The slats keep the soap bar dry, but excess water drains out onto the counter or side of the sink since this dish doesn't have an integrated catchment system.

The final category is the self-draining soap dish, which directs water back into the sink. The Yamazaki Self Draining dish is our favorite of this style. It is subtle, has an intriguing design, and is made entirely of silicone, making it durable and easy to clean. The silicone pegs keep soap elevated and dry, while an angled surface underneath directs water back into the sink or tub.
Suction Soap Dish
This dish suctions onto bathroom surfaces (it works best on tile or plastic shower walls) and holds a single bar of soap, though the basket is rated to hold up to 22 pounds. It is easy to install, even if you aren't incredibly handy. We appreciated the grid pattern of metal that makes up the bottom of the basket, as it can hold a bar of soap until it's paper-thin and almost disintegrating.
Silicone 3-Pack
This fun, flexible, and durable three-pack is an excellent option for a guest bathroom, a kid's room, and other high-use areas. This means it has to be placed on the edge of the sink or tub to drain excess water back into the sink instead of onto the countertop. We liked the shape and feel of this dish, and it is big enough to accommodate large or oddly shaped bars of soap. Since it is both inexpensive and durable, we felt this was a solid option for anyone looking to outfit multiple sinks with soap dishes.
2-Piece Wooden
The third of the wooden slat-style soap dishes we tested is the 2-Piece Wooden set. These dishes are simple and straightforward in terms of design and construction. Slats are stapled to two longer runners. The middle slats are carved out to create a subtle indentation where the soap bar lies.
How to Install a Soap Dish
Choose the right location
Choose a spot on the wall for the new dish that’s four or five tiles below the showerhead—about 16 to 20 inches—and two or three tiles to the right or left. Next, wearing appropriate eye protection, scratch out the grout from around the tile with a grout saw or awl. Then, use a hammer and nail set to punch a series of divots across the face of the tile in an X-shaped pattern. Using those small craters as starting points, bore through the tile (but not the wall behind it) with a 1/4-inch-diameter masonry drill bit.
Remove tile(s) for soap dish installation
While still wearing eye protection, carefully crack the tile into pieces using a 1/4-inch-wide cold chisel and hammer. Pry out the fractured shards of tile and scrape the wall surface clean of any old mortar or leftover adhesive.
Apply tile adhesive
Spread a thin coat of tile adhesive onto the wall with a putty knife. Smear some of the adhesive onto the back of the soap dish as well.
Check for level and fill with grout to finish installation
Firmly press the dish into place and secure it with two or three strips of masking tape. Check to ensure the dish is level. Wait 24 hours, then fill all the joints around the soap dish with grout. Allow the grout to dry overnight before using the shower.
